Coil x TigerBeetle: Databases of The Future

Kelly Weimert

Brand writer for Coil

Coil’s TwitterSpaces series hosts thoughtful conversations between developers, thought leaders, creators, and other bright minds working to shape the future of the web and the ways in which we interact with and navigate it.

On August 25th, Coil hosted a TwitterSpaces conversation between Adrian Hope-Bailie, the founder of Fynbos and Coil’s former head of Interledger services, and Joran Dirk Greef, a staff engineer at Coil who played an integral role in creating TigerBeetle, an innovative database that can track financial transactions at blazing speeds. Since that conversation, Joran announced that TigerBeetle will officially be spinning out from Coil to form its own startup, with Joran at the helm as founder and CEO.

Adrian and Joran deep dive into what TigerBeetle adds to an increasingly vibrant landscape of open-source databases.

The conversation covers TigerBeetle’s three defining pillars:

Performance

You’ll learn all about the key design decisions that give TigerBeetle a unique performance edge, including its advantages over databases like PostgreSQL and RocksDb. The two also discuss cost efficiency with respect to databases and why it’s so important for future innovation.

Safety

Databases and safety should go hand in hand. During this conversation, you’ll learn about the importance of safety as it relates to databases, as well as the steps TigerBeetle takes to ensure it’s safe and secure for users.

Developer Experiences

Finally, the pair discuss the TigerBeetle developer experience, including the types of developers it’s most useful for and what developers need to get started. You’ll also learn about some of the cool projects developers are building with TigerBeetle right now.

We hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did! Follow @Coil to stay current on the latest TwitterSpaces conversations between some of the web’s best and brightest.
