Coil is Proud to Support Open Web Docs

Coil is proud to announce our support for Open Web Docs, a new collective project designed to support a community of technical writers around the strategic creation and long-term maintenance of web platform technology documentation that is open and inclusive for all.

High-quality documentation for web platform technologies is a critically important component of our shared, open digital infrastructure and that’s why we’ve decided to provide resources, alongside Google and Microsoft, to better maintain and sustain documentation of core web platform technologies. Rather than reinvent the wheel, Open Web Docs will provide full-time support to critical web documentation-as-infrastructure projects such as MDN Web Docs.

Supporting foundational digital infrastructure is crucial to the long term sustainability of the open web for all of us. At Coil, we use an open web standard called Web Monetization to stream micropayments to creators in real time and we developed Interledger, an open protocol suite for sending payments across different ledgers. In 2019, and in collaboration with Mozilla and Creative Commons, we launched the $100 million Grant for the Web to boost open, fair and inclusive standards and innovation in Web Monetization. Since then Grant for the Web has distributed over $8mm in grants to support 110+ projects across 27 countries.

If documentation is something you are interested in, we’d like to encourage you to get involved -- and those interested can follow our updates at opencollective.com/open-web-docs, https://github.com/openwebdocs and @OpenWebDocs.
